British Columbia officials have announced the termination of a longstanding program that sent patients to U.S. clinics for radiation therapy, citing improved local wait times as the key factor. The decision reflects confidence in the province’s enhanced healthcare services, which now provide timely, high-quality cancer treatment. By ending the cross-border program, provincial authorities aim to streamline patient care, reduce administrative burdens, and reinforce the capacity of local medical facilities to meet the needs of cancer patients without relying on international options.
Cancer patients in British Columbia will no longer be referred to clinics in Bellingham, Wash., for care, Health Minister Josie Osborne announced Monday.
A total of 1,107 patients have completed radiation therapy at two private clinics in Bellingham, Wash., to date, with nine others scheduled to complete treatment by the end of May
British Columbia is ending a program that sent cancer patients to the United States for treatment, saying provincial wait times have improved enough that they no longer have to rely on clinics south of the border.
The program offered eligible patients the option to travel for radiation therapy treatment at two clinics in Bellingham, Wash. in order to access life-saving treatment.
