Ontario implemented a one-day 25% surcharge on electricity exports to the United States, raising $260,000. The measure impacted power supplies reaching roughly 1.5 million homes across three states and was executed as part of efforts to manage interprovincial trade and energy market dynamics. Officials note that while this surcharge was an isolated regulatory step, it has sparked wider discussions about energy pricing and cross-border trade policies, highlighting the challenges of balancing local resource management with export demands.
On March 10, Ford announced he was placing a 25 per cent surcharge on electricity sent from Ontario to New York, Michigan and Minnesota to retaliate against Trump's tariffs.
Ontario Energy Minister Stephen Lecce said in a statement that the surcharge sent a clear message that the province won’t back down in the fight against Trump’s tariffs
