Updated Canadian guidelines for treating childhood obesity have emerged, outlining new evidence-based options to help healthcare professionals better address the growing epidemic among young patients. The recommendations advise doctors to consider innovative weight‐loss medications, including drugs like Wegovy, and, where appropriate, bariatric surgery as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. The guidelines also stress the importance of reducing stigma and providing integrated nutritional, exercise, and psychological support to improve outcomes for children and teenagers with obesity.
New guidelines encourage physicians to consider prescribing Ozempic and Wegovy to children as young as 12
The new approach recommends focusing on quality of life and mental health — and even includes medications like GLP-1s, which include Ozempic for kids 12 and up when needed.
A new Canadian guideline urges lifestyle interventions for obese children but also says today's new drugs might help kids ages 12 and up
Authors of the clinical advice, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, say that medications and surgery should be offered with nutrition, exercise and psychological support
GLP-1s like Ozempic, as well as weight-loss surgery, are among the recommendations to treat childhood obesity in the first guideline update in Canada in almost 20 years.
